If your organization is in need of training in the core XML technology areas,
Ken Sall Consulting provides several training options at affordable prices.
Features include:
- half-day or full-day overview
- three-, four-, or five-day in-depth training
- up-to-date material often including just-announced developments

Overview Course
The half-day or full-day XML overview is geared toward managers, scientists,
and developers who are looking for an introduction to the ever-expanding
family of XML specifications. The focus is almost entirely on work
done by the World Wide Web Consortium, rather than on the many business
applications of XML technology. Attendees will learn:
- How XML differs from HTML
- Why XML is useful for data representation and interchange
- Why XML is a good basis for many other technologies
- How the W3C develops XML specifications (crucial in differentiating what's mature from what is not)
- Major XML acronyms such as DTD, XSD, SAX, DOM, XSLT, XPath, XLink, XPointer,
XQuery, CSS, XSL-FO, SVG, SOAP, etc.
Multi-Day Course
The three-, four-, or five-day in-depth training can be presented either with or
without the overview, depending upon the background of attendees.
The major focus is on work done by the
World Wide Web Consortium.
Coverage ranges from one-half hour to four hours per topic,
depending partially on the desire for hands-on
experience and the length of the overall course. The core topics include:
- XHTML - HTML's Future: Modularization
- XML - Validation and Parsing Concepts
- Namespaces in XML
- DOM and SAX - Parsing APIs
- DTDs - Basic Modeling
- XML Schema - Structure and Datatypes
- CSS and XSL Formatting Objects - Stylesheets
- XSLT and XPath - Transformations
- XLink and XPointer - Referencing
Any of the following additional topics may be incorporated at negotiable rates:
- Web Services (SOAP, WSDL, UDDI, XML-RPC)
- XQuery
- RELAX NG (Next Generation) - alternative/supplement to XML Schema
- SVG - Scalable Vector Graphics
- MathML
- SMIL - Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language (audio/video)
- XML Signature and Canonicalization
- RDF - Resource Description Framework
Specific objectives of the in-depth training include the following:
- Understanding XML syntax rules
- How XHTML differs from HTML
- Why modularization is important
- How to write a DTD
- What are the pros and cons of XML Schema compared to DTDs
- Why Namespaces are important but controversial
- Why DOM and SAX APIs are both useful to understand
- What other APIs are available for Java developers
- How can CSS be used with XML
- Why XSL Formatting Objects are more powerful than CSS
- How data can be transformed, filtered, and processed using XSLT and XPath
- How to convert XML to HTML, text, or alternative XML formats
- How XLink and XPointer provide powerful near-future referencing paradigms
